About this Pirates word search

Pirates were sea robbers who plundered ships and coastal towns, and their golden age stretched from roughly the 1650s to the 1730s, when fast vessels and busy trade routes made the oceans rich pickings. Sailing the Caribbean and beyond, crews lived by their own rough rules, flew the dreaded skull-and-crossbones flag, and answered to a captain they themselves had chosen. Real figures like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny became legends, and centuries of stories have since turned the pirate into one of the most enduring characters in adventure.

Much of what we picture comes from books and films: the parrot on the shoulder, the wooden peg leg, the eye patch, the gleaming cutlass and the buried chest of doubloons marked with an X on a tattered map. Some of it is true and some is pure storytelling — but real pirate life did include genuine dangers like scurvy from a lack of fresh fruit, the threat of mutiny among a restless crew, and long voyages aboard galleons and schooners through uncharted, lagoon-fringed islands.

This free Pirates word search hauls all of that swashbuckling adventure into one grid, from the treasure and the anchor to the kraken of sailors’ legend and the marauders who hunted the high seas. The words hide across, down, diagonally and — on the harder settings — backwards, so you will need a sharp lookout to spot them all. Play it online on any device, print it for a classroom adventure or a pirate-themed party, or tap New puzzle for an endless supply of fresh boards. Hoist the sails and set off on a screen-light treasure hunt.

How to play a Pirates word search

Every Pirates word search hides a list of pirates-themed words inside a grid of letters, and your job is to track down each one. On this puzzle the words run across, down and diagonally, so keep your eyes moving in every direction as you scan the board.

On a phone or tablet, drag your finger across a word from its first letter to its last — or simply tap the first letter and then the last letter, and the line fills in between. On a computer you can click and drag, or click the two ends. The moment a Pirates word is correct it locks in with a colored highlight and gets crossed off the list, so you can always see what is left to find.

Prefer pencil and paper? Tap Print / Save PDF for a clean copy of this Pirates puzzle, and switch on Large Print from the menu for big, easy-to-read letters. Want a completely fresh board? Tap New puzzle and a new Pirates grid is drawn from a much larger word bank.

Tips to find every word

  • Hunt one letter at a time. Pick the first letter of a Pirates word and scan the grid only for that letter — it is far faster than reading every row.
  • Sweep the diagonals on purpose. Diagonal words are the ones people miss most, so once the easy across-and-down finds are gone, deliberately trace both diagonal directions.
  • Remember words can be backwards. On the harder settings a Pirates word may read right-to-left or bottom-to-top, so check the reverse of every promising streak of letters.
  • Chase the rare letters. A J, Q, X, Z or a double letter inside a word makes it a beacon in the grid — spot the rare letter first, then read outward.
  • Cross words off as you find them. The shrinking word list keeps your attention on the Pirates words that are still hiding.
  • If a board feels too easy or too hard, change the difficulty or tap New puzzle for a different Pirates arrangement.
