About this Basketball word search

Basketball was invented in 1891 by a teacher named James Naismith, who nailed a peach basket to a gym wall in Massachusetts and wrote thirteen simple rules to keep his students active through a cold New England winter. From that humble start the game exploded into one of the most popular sports on Earth, played on driveways, schoolyards and packed arenas in nearly every country. It needs only a ball, a hoop and a flat patch of ground β€” part of why it spread so far, so fast.

The game itself is fast, flowing and full of skill. Two teams of five race up and down the court, dribbling and passing to work the ball toward the basket, then shooting for two or three points while the defence tries to block, steal and grab rebounds. The sport has its own electric vocabulary β€” the layup, the crossover, the swish of a clean shot, and of course the crowd-roaring slam dunk. With a shot clock ticking and the lead swinging back and forth, a close game can come right down to the final buzzer.

This free Basketball word search hides the language of the hardwood across one grid β€” the dunk, the dribble and the rebound; the jump shot, the free throw and the alley-oop; plus fouls, timeouts and the buzzer that ends it all. The words run across, down, diagonally and, on the harder settings, backwards, so you will need quick eyes and good hands to round them up. Play it online on any device, print it for a P.E. class or a game-day party, or tap New puzzle for an endless supply of fresh boards drawn from a deep bank of basketball words.

How to play a Basketball word search

Every Basketball word search hides a list of basketball-themed words inside a grid of letters, and your job is to track down each one. On this puzzle the words run across, down and diagonally, so keep your eyes moving in every direction as you scan the board.

On a phone or tablet, drag your finger across a word from its first letter to its last β€” or simply tap the first letter and then the last letter, and the line fills in between. On a computer you can click and drag, or click the two ends. The moment a Basketball word is correct it locks in with a colored highlight and gets crossed off the list, so you can always see what is left to find.

Prefer pencil and paper? Tap Print / Save PDF for a clean copy of this Basketball puzzle, and switch on Large Print from the menu for big, easy-to-read letters. Want a completely fresh board? Tap New puzzle and a new Basketball grid is drawn from a much larger word bank.

Tips to find every word

  • Hunt one letter at a time. Pick the first letter of a Basketball word and scan the grid only for that letter β€” it is far faster than reading every row.
  • Sweep the diagonals on purpose. Diagonal words are the ones people miss most, so once the easy across-and-down finds are gone, deliberately trace both diagonal directions.
  • Remember words can be backwards. On the harder settings a Basketball word may read right-to-left or bottom-to-top, so check the reverse of every promising streak of letters.
  • Chase the rare letters. A J, Q, X, Z or a double letter inside a word makes it a beacon in the grid β€” spot the rare letter first, then read outward.
  • Cross words off as you find them. The shrinking word list keeps your attention on the Basketball words that are still hiding.
  • If a board feels too easy or too hard, change the difficulty or tap New puzzle for a different Basketball arrangement.
